2024 SEJ Conference Special Events:

Gulfside Assembly Documentary Screening: Thursday, July 11 (Lunch Break)

On Thursday, July 11, at the lunch break, please use your Lake Junaluska meal ticket (or some will be available to purchase) at the Lambuth Hotel and bring your lunch to the International Room and join us. Beverages and cookies will be provided. Please RSVP that you will be attending “the Gulfside Assembly Story” by emailing gulfsideassociation@gmail.com

Gulfside Assembly invites you to view its recently completed historical documentary.  Founded by Bishop Rober E. Jones, the first African American Bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church, "The Gulfside Assembly Story" is a profound documentary that unveils the history and lasting impact of Gulfside Assembly, a sanctuary based on the Chautauqua pillars, amidst the deep-seated racial divides of Mississippi. Through a tapestry of personal testimonials, rich archival footage, and expert commentary, the film explores the visionary foresight of Bishop Jones, who dared to dream of a place where African Americans could seek refuge, education, and spiritual upliftment away from the stifling oppression of segregation.

Jazz Concert: Wednesday, July 10 (8:15 pm)

On Wednesday, July 10 at 8:15 p.m. join Africa University and the Central South District of the North Georgia Conference in Memorial Chapel for a special concert.

Jazz at Lake Junaluska is designed to be a delightful experience for friends of jazz featuring the renowned Milkshake Mayfield and the Milkshake Quintet. It is no wonder that the late legendary radio host, “Tippy” Calloway, befittingly announced Milkshake as trumpeter extraordinaire. His music presentation mirrors the legacy of jazz greats. He has circled the world, gracing national and international stages with some of the greatest ‘who’s who’ among contemporary jazz giants – Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, mentor Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Cab Calloway, Freddie Hubbard, and many others. His astounding jazz portfolio includes performances/opening acts with the SOS band; Bobby Byrd & the JBs; Michael Franks; Alex Bugnon; Kevin Eubanks; Maysa (formerly of Incognito); Angie Stone concerts. The melodic sounds of Milkshake have been featured in the Gospel musical “The Glory Road”; trumpet tribute to the legendary Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong at UNCF Benefit’s Salute to Apollo; the Trumpet Awards; Atlanta Montreux International Jazz Festival; Nice France’s La Grande Parade de Jazz; Montreux Switzerland Jazz Festival; New York’s Carnegie Hall.
